7 Tips for Choosing Outdoor Furniture for Small Outdoor Spaces

Aug 29, 2017Posted by Liberty Home Products

Small outdoor spaces are particularly difficult to furnish as it almost always means compromising on an item over another. This can be very frustrating but thanks to modern advances like retractable shade screens, Phoenix including other state designers have made it possible to furnish a patio or other outdoor space to match your tastes and needs. Furniture items are now being created in a way that they can serve multiple purposes, collapse, expand, and move to different locations when need be.

Look for ‘skinny’ furniture designs

Trim and fit furniture is perfect for a small patio. Instead of a large dining table complete with accompanying chairs, cover a small table with a flexible-base patio umbrella to create a cozy dining area whenever necessary. Go for chairs with skinny legs or save more floor space by choosing sail shades instead of patio umbrellas. To leave more room for entertainment try to place any furniture along the edges and not in the middle. There are countless furniture designs that are less bulky and ideal for tiny outdoor spaces

Flexible is better

Folding tables, flexible base umbrellas, wicker, resin and wood furniture are a common feature on many patios and for many good reasons. They are easy to move around to create extra room and the more flexible furniture is, the easier it can be stored when not in use. Rely on a portable-style fire pit to enhance a night hanging out outside. An outdoor pizza oven with wheels should be a top priority when you are pressed for outdoor space. You can easily move the oven to the garage when it isn’t in use and place it in any section of the garden you find most ideal.

Multipurpose

Choose furniture with more than one uses to save on space that another might occupy. It is important to invest in a piece that can be easily moved around in the patio to serve different purposes. A double-decker rack for example; may double up as an extra prep area or serving table when you entertain outside. Decorative planters may have been created for growing plants but who said they can’t become chic wine coolers or storage for less attractive items like hoses.

Choose stackable furniture

Maximize small spaces by choosing stackable chairs and stools. You can choose only what you need and keep them away in a corner to create more room. Be careful not to stack furniture too high to avoid causing accidents.

Integrated storage

You may need to have some storage space in your patio furniture so you don’t have to run back inside for a fork or beer. An outdoor ottoman or stool should have a hinged door so you can store accessories. The vertical space on the side of an outdoor kitchen island may be used as storage for pots or a pantry. If possible, try to ensure that each furniture item has integrated storage for cords, linens, utensils and even groceries. Some people think integrated storage compromises the design of furniture but that is not the case if you are ready to shop around for tasteful designs.

Decor

Especially in a small space, you need to choose furniture that reflects your home’s design and general decor. Before you go out shopping, think about the colors that will create the illusion of space and ensure that there is harmony between the space and pieces you chose for it. Moderation is important in choosing furniture for small patios lest it looks cluttered.

Measure

You know that your space is small but there is need to measure it before picking out furniture. If you are aware of how big or small a corner is, it will be easy to buy a storage shelf that will fit in. It is also advisable to draw a layout of the furniture in the patio for an idea of how it will fit in the space. Shopping is much easier when you know the exact size of items you need.

Simplicity is imperative when choosing furniture for a small outdoor space. Clean lines, fewer patterns and the occasional splash of color go a long way in creating the illusion of space in a rather cramped yard.
