In the plans it says to leave a 1/4" - 1/2" airspace between the flue liner and teh bricks for expansion purposes except in the case of structural integrity.

My question is - I'd love to use some of the base (or top, if that's better) bricks for flue support, but I don't want to mess with the laws of thermodynamics. What did everyone else do?

Hi Amber,

What type of flue pipe did you decide to go with? I used clay pipes and was told to leave a 1"-2" air space between the pipe and the brick chimney. I believe 2" is code here. As far as the base is concerned I used fire bricks for a base support cut to fit and then cemented the pipe to it. I have pictures of this in my album.
