There is a small fish shack located on the harbor just off Granville Island called <strong>Go Fish<\/strong>.\u00a0 It is an institution there &#8212; I have seen lines winding along the sea wall, as up to 50 people wait in the sun or rain for their chance to have some of the freshest fish in the Pacific Northwest.\u00a0 It is that good! <\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_389\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-389\" class=\"caption alignright size-full wp-image-389\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/_mg_6547.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"The perfect fish taco: a combination of the warm grilled fish and tortilla with the cool, chipotle tartar sauce, slaw and salsa.\" align=\"right\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/_mg_6547.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/_mg_6547-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-389\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The perfect fish taco: a combination of the warm grilled fish and tortilla with the cool, chipotle tartar sauce, slaw and salsa.<\/p><\/div>I fell in love with their tacos, which they call <strong><em>Tacones<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 These are not formed by folding a corn tortilla like a typical taco, but rather, using a flour tortilla and rolling it like a cone. The tacos are simple: fresh fish that varies based on what&#8217;s available from the boats only steps away, a delicious tangy Asian cole slaw, and a spicy tartar sauce.\u00a0 But, somehow, their ingredients come alive when mixed together, creating what has remained atop my list of most memorable foods.\u00a0 I will admit, it may be that sitting only steps away from the very water that the fish was caught in adds to the memories but, regardless, this taco is, for me, the very definition of memorable.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>My wife, Shanna, and I became a little obsessed after one of our trips there, with trying to recreate these <em>tacones <\/em>at home.\u00a0 Getting a good piece of fish is absolutely necessary, and if you can, I recommend grilling it over charcoal instead of a gas grill, but that&#8217;s the easy part.\u00a0 We had to figure out the slaw and the tartar sauce &#8211; that&#8217;s what really brings it all together.\u00a0 The slaw they created at Go Fish is fresh tasting, full of flavor, and really brings the fish up to a new level.<\/p>\n<p>Shanna scoured the internet for Asian slaw recipes, looking to see what ingredients were in them, to see if we could find something that at least matched what was in our minds.\u00a0 She found one, read the ingredients to me, and we both said, this is the one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The English Family<\/strong><strong> <em>&#8220;Fish Tacone Quest&#8221; <\/em>Recipe<em><br \/><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Asian Cole Slaw:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shanna found a recipe and we started playing with it, making some adjustments.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_390\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-390\" class=\"caption alignright size-full wp-image-390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/_mg_6489.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Make adjustments after you let slaw set...\" align=\"right\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/_mg_6489.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/_mg_6489-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-390\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Make adjustments after you let slaw set&#8230;<\/p><\/div>3 tbsp seasoned rice vinegar<br \/>3 tbsp sesame oil<br \/>2 \u00bd tbsp creamy peanut butter<br \/>1 \u00bd tbsp soy sauce<br \/>1 \u00bd tbsp brown sugar<br \/>1 tbsp minced fresh ginger<br \/>\u00be tbsp minced garlic<br \/>1 bag cabbage mix (supermarket)<br \/>1 handful red cabbage (bagged)<br \/>1 handful julienned carrots (bagged)<br \/>1 red bell pepper chopped<br \/>3 green onions chopped<br \/>\u00bc-\u00bd cup chopped cilantro <br \/>sliced almonds \u2013 toasted &#8211;to taste <br \/>sesame seeds \u2013 toasted &#8211;to taste<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Whisk together the vinegar, oil, peanut butter, soy sauce, brown sugar, ginger &#038; garlic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Mix all cabbage, carrots, bell pepper, green onion, *cilantro, almonds &#038; sesame seeds.<br \/> *I am a huge cilantro fan.\u00a0 I usually throw more in over Shanna\u2019s shoulder, or while she\u2019s turned away.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_391\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-391\" class=\"caption alignright size-full wp-image-391\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/_mg_6538.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Place plenty of slaw in tacone, and serve more on the side.\" align=\"right\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/_mg_6538.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/_mg_6538-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-391\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Place plenty of slaw in tacone, and serve more on the side.<\/p><\/div>&#8211;Toss it all together and it&#8217;s ready to use.<br \/>Note: Taste the dressing and, if it&#8217;s a little too sweet, you can add a bit more soy sauce and vinegar to taste.&#8221; The flavors will continue to blend in the refrigerator.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the link to the recipe we originally found:<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/allrecipes.com\/Recipe\/Asian-Coleslaw\/Detail.aspx<br \/>We cut the link recipe in half (which is the adjusted version above) and added and substituted a few things.\u00a0 We changed to Seasoned Rice Vinegar, Sesame Oil, bagged cabbage and carrots.\u00a0 and added the toasted almonds and sesame seeds.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_392\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-392\" class=\"caption alignright size-full wp-image-392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/_mg_6478.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Maranade Fish just prior to grilling...\" align=\"right\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/_mg_6478.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/_mg_6478-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-392\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maranade Fish just prior to grilling&#8230;<\/p><\/div><strong>The Fish:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fresh Fish: Use anything will work.\u00a0 We love to use Salmon, Albacore, Red Snapper, or even Talapia.<\/p>\n<p>I put a little olive oil on the fish and season it with salt, pepper and then, for color and a little spice, some paprika and a dash of Chili Powder. You can also add Adobo and maybe even a little Cayenne if you want some more kick.\u00a0 Then squeeze some fresh lime, or lemon juice over the fish &#8211;or, both.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"caption alignright size-full wp-image-393\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/_mg_6537.jpg\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/_mg_6537.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/_mg_6537-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/>Grill and Serve.<\/p>\n<p>Grilling fish over charcoal, with some wood chunks always improves grilled fish dramatically.\u00a0 The smoke adds another dimension to the flavor. I like to cook the fish just long enough, and then put it all on a plate and cover the plate tightly with foil.\u00a0 As you are getting ready to eat, the fish keeps cooking a little and the foil seems to hold in the moisture and the fish comes out really moist.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our Spicy Tartar Sauce:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We do a Chipotle Chili Tartar Sauce, based on any basic tartar sauce recipe, and just throw this together without much measuring.\u00a0 Put in as much of the following ingredients as you want, to your taste.<br \/>(You can find exact recipes via Google, or Food Network for Spicy Tartar Sauce, or Chipotle Tartar Sauce.)<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_394\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-394\" class=\"caption alignright size-full wp-image-394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/_mg_6452.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Chopped Pickles, Capers, and Mom's Pickled Jalapenos\" align=\"right\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/_mg_6452.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/_mg_6452-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-394\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chopped Pickles, Capers, and Mom&#8217;s Pickled Jalapenos<\/p><\/div>Ingredients:<br \/>Canned Chipotle Peppers in Adobo<br \/>Mayonnaise<br \/>Pickles<br \/>Capers<br \/>Salt<br \/>Pepper<br \/>Lime Juice<br \/>Or, Mom\u2019s Soy Pickled Jalapenos (see an earlier post for how to make this amazing condiment!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>To make:<\/strong><br \/>Put a big glob of mayo in a bowl. Dice and add to the Mayo:<br \/>&#8211;3 of the Chipotle Peppers and its sauce \u2013 or more later depending on taste\/color. I like the crunch they add.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Capers &#8212; I give a quick chop to the caper pile.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Add salt and pepper.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Stir the ingredients together.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Add freshly squeezed Lime (or lemon) juice<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Taste and adjust. <\/p>\n<p>The tartar sauce turns a beautiful burnt orange color with the Chipotle peppers.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p><strong>The Tacones:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_396\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-396\" class=\"caption alignright size-full wp-image-396\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/_mg_6552.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Serve with slaw and some chips and fresh salsa on the side...\" align=\"right\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/_mg_6552.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/_mg_6552-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-396\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Serve with slaw and some chips and fresh salsa on the side&#8230;<\/p><\/div>&#8211;On medium sized flour tortilla (about 8\u201d), ideally warmed on the grill grates, giving them a slight char here and there on each tortilla, spread some of the Chili Tartar Sauce \u2013 a good amount.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Lay out some of the Cole Slaw on the sauce.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Break up some of the fish onto the bed of Cole Slaw.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;squeeze a bit more lemon, or lime on the fish.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Roll the tortilla into a cone &#8212; that is, a <em>TACONE<\/em> and eat.<\/p>\n<p>Serve with a pile of coleslaw on the side and, maybe some fresh salsa and tortilla chips.<\/p>\n<p>To capture even more of the Go Fish experience, you should add French fries, (aka &#8220;Chips&#8221;) and sit outside next to a harbor!\u00a0 Or, make the trip up there, because they not only serve amazing <em>tacones<\/em>, but the absolute best Fish and Chips you&#8217;ve ever had.<\/p>\n<p>Let me know what brilliant additions you find and add to these.
