{"id":1295,"date":"2013-10-16T23:50:27","date_gmt":"2013-10-17T03:50:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/2013\/10\/16\/a-couple-pizza-rolls\/"},"modified":"2013-10-16T23:50:27","modified_gmt":"2013-10-17T03:50:27","slug":"a-couple-pizza-rolls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/a-couple-pizza-rolls\/","title":{"rendered":"Wood Fired Pizza Rolls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What&#8217;s a pizza roll?<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_1289\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1289\" class=\"caption alignright size-full wp-image-1289\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/10\/_mg_4652.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"A pizza roll is cheesy!\" align=\"right\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/10\/_mg_4652.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/10\/_mg_4652-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1289\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A pizza roll is cheesy!<\/p><\/div>If you fold a pizza it&#8217;s called a calzone. \u00a0If you roll it up, it&#8217;s a stromboli. \u00a0I&#8217;ve seen something in between simply called a sausage roll. \u00a0I found out recently when breaking in my new wood fired oven and learning to use a metal pizza peel that what starts out as a pizza may end up flipping over while going in and end up coming out of the oven something more like a calzone! \u00a0When this first happened to me a light bulb went off and I said to myself &#8220;So that&#8217;s where the CALZONE comes from!&#8221; \u00a0Or, maybe they made Calzones first and one unfolded as it was slid into some ancient wood burning oven and the poor guy slinging it in said to himself &#8220;Atsa da pizza!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>My local &#8220;Brooklyn-style&#8221; pizzeria, Valentino&#8217;s sells a nice sausage roll. \u00a0Whenever we order pizza from them, we throw a couple of these babies on the order. \u00a0We cut them up and snack on them as a necessary warm-up act while getting ready to hit the pizza. \u00a0I was getting some ingredients to toss onto some dough and, when I browsed the pork products, my minds-eye drifted off to those sausage rolls and I decided I would be trying something new when I got home.<\/p>\n<p>Should I fold? \u00a0Should I roll? \u00a0I ended up sort of doing both. \u00a0They came out great in the wood fired oven. \u00a0I&#8217;ll have to try this in the home oven next. \u00a0The high heat of the wood oven melted everything nicely inside and set up a great crispy charred crust all around. Even still, it was delicious!<\/p><\/div>I made the first roll like a pizza. \u00a0After I spread the dough I just started topping it and I realized that I made a pizza! \u00a0So, I just sort of lifted the sides and joined them and then folded the whole thing into a roll. \u00a0What was nice, was where the dough was pinched together it was clumpy and doughy and gave the roll some more texture and a real rustic look. \u00a0When I made the second one, I wised up and put the toppings in one place anticipating the end result! \u00a0Either way works! \u00a0In fact, my first accidental calzone looked like a disaster, but tasted amazing. \u00a0It was more of a Pizza-Roll-Over.<\/p>\n<p>Can I coin that term?<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_1294\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1294\" class=\"caption alignright size-full wp-image-1294\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/10\/_mg_4655.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"A little Chili Oil goes a long way to finishing this up.\" align=\"right\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/10\/_mg_4655.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/10\/_mg_4655-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1294\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A little Chili Oil goes a long way to finishing this up.<\/p><\/div>The great thing about these is that they not only tasted great but they also saved really well. \u00a0When we were done eating, we sliced up the rolls into snack sized slices and tossed them into a baggie. \u00a0The next day they came out, went into the oven and baked up to near perfection again.\u00a0 Since I eat my leftover pizza as a cold slice in the morning, while going out the door, these rolls make a great breakfast-to-go alternative.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s my second favorite food? \u00a0You guessed it &#8212; cold pizza.<\/p>\n<p>Enjoy the pics and let us know if you have any favorite calzone\/stromboli\/pizza roll ideas!<\/p>\n<p>{gallery}pizzarolls{\/gallery}<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What&#8217;s a pizza roll?
