The pepperoni pizza is, by all accounts, the most popular pizza here in the USA. Picture your average 10 year old boy walking into his local pizza shop. \u00a0&#8220;Can I have a medium pepperoni pizza, uhmm\u2026also with roasted broccoli?!!&#8221; \u00a0That just isn&#8217;t going to happen. \u00a0Maybe I&#8217;m wrong though.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_1159\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1159\" class=\"caption alignright size-full wp-image-1159\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/02\/_mg_6979.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Pepperoni, right?!\" align=\"right\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/02\/_mg_6979.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/02\/_mg_6979-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1159\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pepperoni, right?!<\/p><\/div>I love broccoli. \u00a0Even my daughter loves broccoli and that kid is like a cat &#8211; she&#8217;s finicky! \u00a0If you&#8217;ve read my recipe musings you&#8217;ll already know that Owen (my son) likes broccoli. \u00a0He&#8217;s like Mikey; &#8220;He eats everything!&#8221; \u00a0I was making some broccoli a while back and, after cutting the branches off\u00a0the stocks, I noticed the cross section of the stalk and it looked moist and interesting for some reason. So, I sliced a piece off and ate it. \u00a0It was good. \u00a0I thought, why do we cut off the top of the broccoli, the florets, and just throw all of this away? \u00a0Maybe the collective &#8220;we&#8221; doesn&#8217;t, but I had never really been served broccoli trunk before.<\/p>\n<p>So, I started chopping more of the stalk and using it in salads, or even thicker chunks when steaming broccoli for dinner, and life was good. \u00a0One day when I was slicing some stalk I noticed the shape of the little discs. \u00a0For some reason I thought of pizza topping and then, aha, broccoli pepperoni! \u00a0I know this may not be something I should be sharing in public, it could get me locked up. \u00a0But, I trust you all to keep this part of the story to yourselves.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_1160\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1160\" class=\"caption alignright size-full wp-image-1160\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/02\/_mg_6980.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Pepperoni-ing the broccoli.\" align=\"right\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/02\/_mg_6980.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/02\/_mg_6980-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1160\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pepperoni-ing the broccoli.<\/p><\/div>I am still working on the recipe, but thought I would share it now, even while still in development, because I think it&#8217;s an interesting concept. \u00a0A big part of what we are searching for here on Pizza Quest is not just that perfect pizza, or perfect final product, but what is interesting; what is the process; who are the driven people and what drives them to create amazing food &#8212; how did they get here? \u00a0I know this aha moment is just a small example of that quest, but it is a part of the process, at least for me, of making our lives interesting, enriched, and fun. They will finish baking on the pizza.<\/p><\/div>*Note: \u00a0I have been making this by &#8220;eye&#8221; and &#8220;feel.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 These amounts are approximate. \u00a0Start with less and add more of each as needed, per your taste. \u00a0Mix it all together and taste one piece. \u00a0Adjust and taste again until you have it where you like it. \u00a0You can find all sorts of homemade pepperoni recipes online that can guide you if you want\/need exact spice measurements. \u00a0As I play with this, I&#8217;ll updated the recipe here. Please do the same if you have any suggested tweaks.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>To do:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cut the broccoli heads off the stalks. \u00a0Trim the stalks as needed. \u00a0Cut off the bottom edge.<\/p>\n<p>Slice broccoli into 1\/8&#8243; slices.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_1163\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1163\" class=\"caption alignright size-full wp-image-1163\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/02\/_mg_7005.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"I would put a little more broccorroni on next time.  \" align=\"right\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/02\/_mg_7005.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/02\/_mg_7005-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1163\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I would put a little more broccorroni on next time.<\/p><\/div>*You don&#8217;t have to be precise because varying the slices gives a variety of textures after they are cooked. \u00a0The slightly thicker slices are more <span style=\"white-space: pre;\"> <\/span>moist, while the thinner ones get a little crispier and curl up more.<\/p>\n<p>Place slices in a bowl and add the ingredients. \u00a0I did so to taste. \u00a0I&#8217;ve added approximate amounts above, but think this can be done by adding what you think feels right and then tasting and adjusting.<\/p>\n<p>I used the olive oil, soy and rice wine vinegar to form the spices into a marinade and add flavor.\u00a0 In a previous version<div id=\"attachment_1164\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1164\" class=\"caption alignright size-full wp-image-1164\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/02\/_mg_7020.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"I used some Bianco DiNapoli tomatoes with a little sea salt and some fresh mozzarella for this pizza.  Delicious!\" align=\"right\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/02\/_mg_7020.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/02\/_mg_7020-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1164\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I used some Bianco DiNapoli tomatoes with a little sea salt and some fresh mozzarella for this pizza.  Delicious!<\/p><\/div> I used a brewed my own fish sauce, which is basically equal parts commercial fish sauce, vinegar, water and sugar, boiled. \u00a0I loved the flavor that brought, but my wife thought it was a little fishy. \u00a0Try that if you like the fish sauce flavor instead of the soy\/vinegar combo which turned out quite nice as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pre-Bake:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pre-heat your oven to 350 Degrees.<\/p>\n<p>Lay your marinaded broccoli &#8220;pepperoni&#8221; slices out on a cookie sheet in a single layer. This is a little work because they will all be stuck together in the bowl!<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_1165\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1165\" class=\"caption alignright size-full wp-image-1165\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/02\/_mg_7023.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"This was a great pizza with an interesting twist on a very popular topping.  \" align=\"right\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/02\/_mg_7023.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.fornobravo.com\/pizzaquest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/02\/_mg_7023-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1165\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This was a great pizza with an interesting twist on a very popular topping.<\/p><\/div>Place into the oven for about 8-10 minutes. \u00a0Check, and when they are softening and starting to curl, or some of the thinner slices are starting to brown on the edges, pull it out and turn the slices over with a \u00a0pair of tongs. \u00a0Place the pan back into the oven and check the pieces in about 5 minutes. \u00a0You don&#8217;t need to cook them all the way. \u00a0If using on pizza they will cook another 6-10 minutes. \u00a0The pre-baking is just to get them started.<\/p>\n<p>You can cook these ahead of time and keep them in the refrigerator for later use. \u00a0They can even be thrown on a sandwich as a topping to add a little spice and flavor.<\/p>\n<p>Check back here, as I&#8217;ll update this post with more details on my vegetables pepperoni quest!<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Enjoy!<\/p>\n<p>{gallery}broccolipepperoni{\/gallery}<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Broccoli Pepperoni?\u00a0 Broccoli and pepperoni don&#8217;t go together in a sentence very often.
