Building Outdoor Kitchen Cabinets
You can build outdoor kitchen cabinets from concrete blocks, metal studs, welded steel or a combination of the three. There are also pre-made kits that let you build outdoor cabinets like tinker toys, and there are laminated cabinets made using compressed woods and glues capable of withstanding water and outdoor conditions. Each has its pluses and minuses.
Here are some ideas and photos that might help you design and build your outdoor kitchen.
Concrete Block or Brick
Plus:
East and fast to build, inexpensive
Minus:
Heavy to install and it can be difficult to construct more complex outdoor kitchen shapes and designs, such as doors, shelves, and openings for appliance.
Metal Studs and Concrete Board
Plus:
Lighter and easier to customize; can go up faster if you are experienced
Minus:
Learning curve, time required for complex cuts
Melded Steel
Plus:
Work can be done off-site and set in place; solid and durable
Minus: Can be more expensive, difficult to do on-site for larger outdoor kitchens and complex jobs; cannot be DIY
Prefab Kits
Plus:
Easier to install; lots of designs and pieces ready-made
Minus: Cost; still requires installation time
