Hi guys, I want to build a pompeii oven so I loaded the forno bravo plans. But my idea is to build an iron frame with wheels, instead of an regular cement brick frame, and build the oven over the iron frame. The purpose for this is that I don't have a definitive location. My question is, do I have to put a layer of sand before the cement floor(where the oven will lay on) in order to protect the iron frame from heat?

Hi billynorris, I assume that you will be insulating your oven from the concrete slab that will sit on top of the iron frame. If this is the case everything that I have read on this site so far would seem to indicate that not much heat gets past the insulation so you should be good. matt

Remember: ovens are heavy and brittle. Your stand and wheels need to be really substantial. Once you put it on wheels you need to think about weight reduction: otherwise it becomes too top heavy. You might consider an iron plate instead of a support concrete slab below your insulation.

I figure my oven weights about 1500 lbs (a 40 incher). It is a gravity masonry dome - any kind of flexing will likely damage it. Having said that, there are some who have built mobile pizza ovens. Search this site and you will find some useful discussion on that topic.

| I used an iron frame for the bas of my oven to try and save some weight. It's been solid but I don't have it on wheels which might addd some lateral sres when moving it. Of course stone veneer certainly didn't add to the "lightnes"......

You might want to look at this build as he built his oven on wheels for the same reason as you. http://www.fornobravo.com/forum/f8/a...oven-4743.html (Aussie Mobile base oven)

I came with this idea after I went from a trip to Naples, Italy, and I visited a pizza oven factory. I saw the pics of the guy from AU, but the frame I saw in Italy were more robust, I got some pics that may be I can posted later today. BTW, I took a pizza trainning with Enzo Coccia, I knew about him through this forum.
