Default Gaps in floor and expansion joint

Hello all,

I set my floor today in the fireclay and sand mixture. I cut the floor so the dome will rest outside the floor. I was wondering about two things before I proceed.

1. Do I need to leave room for the floor to expand when I set the soldier course or do you just mortar them right to the side of the floor.
2. Do you fill the gaps in the floor with anything? I have some gaps where the bricks don't quite touch, nothing major, 1/8" max; just seems like it would collect flour and stuff.

I will post pics in my thread at:

Best,

Chris

Chris,

Yes, leave a gap for the floor to expand. I left 1/8". Some guys place a piece of cardboard around the floor as they build their first course.

As far as floor brick gaps go, don't sweat them. They will fill with ash.
