Question Fire Brick dome question

I recently installed a firebrick dome . The peak of the dome is not smooth as the bricks are stepped up to the flu about 1/4" for 3 courses. I'm noticing smoke coming out the front oven opening, but the chimney has a nice draft. Do you think this is from not having the dome create a smooth flow of air & heat? Is the smoke bouncing off the brick edges? Any feedback would be very helpful
