Leeth,

Think a little more info is needed here. If you mean does the mortar that you use to lay up the dome bricks need to be waterproof, the answer is no. You use refractory mortar for that. After the dome has cured, it must be insulated in one of several ways. After that, you can either make an igloo shape or build a steel stud enclosure. Here's where the waterproofing comes in; you have to keep the insulation and the oven dry. There are waterproof stuccos out there, or you can paint the exterior of your finished igloo. A steel stud enclosure should be finished off with a waterproof roof with enough slope on it to shed water. Am I on the right track here? If I remember what the weather in Hull is like, waterproofing will be an issue.

Jim

One more thing. If you are having trouble finding refractory mortar, or it is crazy expensive, you can make your own high heat mortar with Portland cement, sand, lime and fireclay. It's less expensive and it can be easier to find. There is a section in the Pompeii plans that talks about the trade-offs and gives you the recipe for making your own mortar.

Jim really is right on the waterproof part. Once your oven is done, you have to keep water away from the oven and insulation with a waterproof enclosure.

James

James, Leeth,

I think Leeth should get in touch with Alf to source materials in the UK, though he hasn't been active for a while. Why don't you send him an email?

Yes, he's in Cumbria. Alf's doing fine, and installing Forno Bravo ovens, building trailer pizza ovens, etc., and keeping very busy. But it's true, he has not been here. Hmmm. :-)
