Wink Stone wall foundation

I was wondering if a U shaped stone wall can be used instead of concrete blocks and slab footing. in other words: can the stone wall replace tha blocks that support the hearth slab?

You should probably have some sort of foundation under it. You don't want the ground to shift, sink, heave or settle under your hard work.

Perhaps a few inches of compacted rock or gravel under a stone wall?
