Default Refractory Mortar

Hey all
what is the best mix for the refractory mortar mix and what sand is the best for this mix i.e brickies sand or sharp sand?

Go for the poor mans mortar, 1 part portland cement, 1 part quick lime, 1 part fireclay and 3 parts brickie sand.
Wet your bricks well and go for it.

i have a refractory cement from my local yard (they got it in for me) should i use the distructions on the back or is there an ideal mix??

I'd follow the instructions on the bag/container.
Personally, I wouldn't buy such a product as many members who have used similar products report cracks. I used the home brew and have no cracks at all.
