insulation board dimensions

Hi

How far do you need to extend the insulation board past the actual dimensions of the dome (if at all)? I mean do you have to extend it out so the insulation of the dome meets the board insulation?

And just confirming that a 2 inch board is sufficient? Has anyone used more or is this say 4 inch an overkill / waste of money?
