Default Indian Myna Bird Plague.

Indian Myna Bird Plague.

If you live down the East Coast of Australia you will no doubt be aware of the Indian Myna Bird Plague.
For those that dont know, these rats of the air were brought to Melbourne in the 1860's to control insects, they now are established all down the East coast.

They destroy the native birds habitats laying eggs in other birds nests and colonize a whole area.
You cant leave any food out for pets as they steal it, Ive seen videos of them entering houses to steal food, very cunning indeed.
They also strip whole trees of any fruit long before its ripe enough to pick.

Ive tried everything to eradicate them but they are way too smart to be trapped or baited.

Until.......I put up a chook pen to keep 3 small chooks for eggs, the Mynas find there way in to the chook pen but cant get out.
With the aid of a net and a Jack Russell dog we have dispatched 40 of the buggers in the last month alone.

Bryce Courtneys character in Matthew Flinders Cat did his bit to reduce their population by wrapping a Ratsack pellet with bread and feeding them in the park.

I have not tried it, but I think the idea is that the pellet is totally enclosed by the soft bread so they don't sense it. We also have the wretched things up here in Townsville. They're everywhere.

I wonder if you could cook and eat them? Pass them off as quail.

I was wondering the same tonight, my 4 legged partner and I caught 4 of the buggers.
Nice pigeon sized oven food perhaps?

Angry Re: Indian Mynah Bird Plague.

Hi All
The council in Coffs harbour are the experts in mass eratication it seems. They track them to where the sleep then set a trap baited with you guessed
thier favoured food.... dog food. Next morning the traps are gassed with engine fumes and the evidence wisked away before the do gooders know.
We have had some in the Nth suburbs of brisbane and they used the same system... havn't seem one myself in brisbane and hope it stays that way.
Cant believe thier in townsville thought the council in Coffs were keeping them from coming Nth
regards dave
