Default final plug

Is there a good reason not to "bridge" the final few layers with full sized bricks cut on the proper angles, versus going round and round with ever smaller/more tapered chains of bricks? I have gotten alot of good information using this forum and a little help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
