Default Vent problems, Pompeii 42 in Utah

Hi everyone. I'm new here and this is my first post.
So it took me a month to build my oven and now I am on the curing process and I find a lot of smoke coming out of the oven arch. A lot is going up the flue but I get a good amount out the door smoking up my backyard. The vent opening is 13" x 4.5" and then I bring it up to a 10x6'' clay flue pipe(oval). Did I do something wrong? Also Is there a way to not smell like a camp fire every time it is used?
Thanks for all the help!
