One other advantage is that you can start sloping the walls in above that first course, because making the castable stand up vertically is a bit tricky, once it starts to slope in it gets easier and easier. I've found the trick is to take a handful of the mix and use one hand to press in from the outside while using the other hand to make a flat, horizontal platform at the top of that handful. By working all the way around the dome in this way, you then have a good ledge to place the next course on top. |
