| Sure, you can use heat-stop. Put the powder down dry, just enough to cover the lumps in the vermiculite concrete, lay the brick floor, and when you're happy with how the floor is lying, wet the brick floor to set the concrete. The only advantage to the fireclay-sand mixture is that it's much cheaper than heat-stop. |

| I didn't use any fireclay at all. I layed insulation board on the perlite/portland insulation hearth, and the board went on level. I just layed my bricks ontop of the boards.

| Mikipal, I ordered the FB Boards from Forno-Bravo. They are fantastic. Even though my perlite/portland hearth was rough on top, the boards went on nice and level. A perfect floor for the firebricks, and much better insulation than perlite/portland alone.

| I agree with Pizzajnky I put down a 3 1/2 of perlite base mainly to raise the hearth level then the 2 inch Isol board on top. Even with the Iso board I had to level the bricks a little. I couldn't imagine trying to put the bricks down on the perlite/concrete it was very uneven. THanks Dick |

| I used Perlcrete.... then I poured about a 1 inch thick "slab" of high heat mortar on top. (poor man's) It was nice and level. But I love the idea of perlcrete followed by insulating board. An oven can never be insulated enough. IMHO
