Sure, you can use heat-stop. Put the powder down dry, just enough to cover the lumps in the vermiculite concrete, lay the brick floor, and when you're happy with how the floor is lying, wet the brick floor to set the concrete.

The only advantage to the fireclay-sand mixture is that it's much cheaper than heat-stop.
