I visited Cafe de Vili's last year, at about 1 am on a week night. Great vibe, street people and shift workers eating alongside people in dinner suits and evening gowns.

I got a pie and a drink to go, as I was heading for the three hour drive home.

There was one interesting thing I might indulge in next time I'm there.
I noticed they had mixed boxes of frozen "seconds". I reckon it was about 3 dozen bakery items, pies, pasties, sausage rolls, etc. For about $30 if memory serves. I reckon I'll give it a try one day.

I've always wondered what we would call an Aussie national dish. Reckon a decent meat pie would be a front runner.

My home town had a pie cart for years. Had many a pie from it on a winters night, on the way home from the pub or snapper fishing.

Thumbs up Re: Now this is just too much

Quite some years ago, when visiting my father and step mother (then) up in Bundaberg Qld, a small petrol garage in the suburban backstreets had an A frame sign out the front advertising Vilis pies and pasties. When questioned about them, they said that they get frozen cartons shipped from Adelaide but would like many more as they sell our in no time. Since the Sydney Olympics, Vilis has taken Australia by storm and I think he now has bakeries elsewhere. Yet another success story from Adelaide.

Hi Nell - It seems that they have moved on from Bundy. There is one small pie maker that knocks out a good product here now. Pie & a can $4.00.

Got hungry at lunch time, so called into Cafe DeVilli's (at the rear of his Adelaide factory and experienced a pie floater. I must say that it rated exactly as the Cowley ones available when they had their pie cart/caravan in the city after hours.
It was great, filling and $11.00
The other picture is an article of how Villi has captured the UK market with the good old Aussie pie.Sorry if you can't read the fine print, will scan the article and put up if anyone needs it but have just uploaded new OSX and the old borrowed software from my previous employer no longer runs, so waiting for new Adobe CS suite.

Cheers and enjoy!

Neill

The pastry is a sort of shortcrust style. I blame that.

Pies should have flaky pastry. end of story.
