Tool for moving fire/brushing cooking surface.
 
Hi Guys,
I know that one can buy various shiney new tools to perform the tasks mentioned above. However, part of my self induced remit for my pizza oven is to do everything on a minimal budget using recycled materials where possible.
With this in mind, has anyone seen or made tools for moving the fire, (this one I can do with a piece of metal on a handle, but if anyone has a better idea I would love to hear it.) and, or sweeping the cooking surface prior to cooking.
I would love to hear from anyone.

Yes I have a universal tool like you discribed , basically a tent peg pushed in a hollow metal curtain rod. It's heavy enough to push around the fire , the hollow handle never gets hot or burnt and the hook at the ends great for dragging out pans and such.
1.2 mm aluminum is thick enough to make a metal peel with for getting your pizza out with and the aluminium will not damage the hearth.
A wooden peel for building your pizza on can be easily built out of 8 mm ply bevel the edges and sand smooth so they slide off with a bit of flour underneath.
Not big on brooms and brushes always manage to burn them so I use a simple flat homemade aluminium rake to push and pull the hot ash were you want.
Couple of ways to clean the lite ash left. Use the flat of the metal peel and slap on the hearth the ashes disturbed should go up the chimney. Next way make a lite mop by wiring some strips of cloth to a wood handle. It only has to be lite so it doesn't take the heat from the hearth. The water in the mope turns to steam instantly on the hot hearth and lifts the ash strait off ... Cool to watch.
Last way make a blow pipe to blow it off the remaining ash . Simple one is to take the head off an old golf club and use the hollow handle . Don't forget to blow not suck.

I'll have a go a the rake for moving the embers. I've already made a plywood peel, need to find some alloy for the metal one.
I like the idea of a blow pipe. I trhink I'll use some copper pipe I have.

I made a few tools for my recently completed oven. The peels and the rakes are aluminum plate (about 1.2 mm like Dave recommended). The 3 prong thing that looks suspiciously like a gardening implement is just that and is good for moving logs in the flames and pushing and pulling cooking pans. The 'broom' is a brickies brush fitted with a handle, it probably will burn but is good if kept out of the fire. The curved rake is good for moving the fire to the side (I found it nearly impossible with a rake that is 90 degrees from the handle. Finally the shovel is from Bunnings with a handle added. The aluminium plate is quite easy to work and needs no special tools.

In the spirit of recycling, the aluminium plate is from the scrap metal yard, as is the aluminium tube that the round metal handles are made from (total cost $25). This was unused offcuts that still had the plastic on it. The timber I had around (some was recycled boxing) and the purchased items included the 3 prong thing $7.95, the brush $14 and the shovel about $10. Total for the lot is less than $60.

The tools work fine. I figure that if refinement is needed it will be another job. I think the deluxe ones that can be purchased are very nice but they are a bit expensive.

Nice job on the tools. I have an old stainless gas grill that I plan on cutting up for mine when I get a chance.

I have found a good supply of cheap alloy.
So 1.2mm thick. Is about 300mm x 300mm about right for the peel?
What is the smaller circular peel for?

That one is 300 x 300 and works fine. The small round one I use to turn things around lift edges for a look. It is easier and less clumsy than the big one. It is fine for getting smaller things out as well. There are those who may be able to manage those things with the big one but I am but a humble Apprentice!

I found 1.2 mm is the right thickness for Stainless too. I tried .9 mm but it was a tad too thin for my liking. Also you don't have make the peel so wide that the whole pizza will fit on it. I prefer to place the pizza with a wooden peel and use the stainless one for turning and removal. When the pizza has cooked a little it is firm enough for it to overlap the sides of the metal peel. This is an advantage as the narrower head is easier to work inside the oven.

So 1.2mm has been ok? a lot of the tools that you buy use 1.5mm but 1.2 is easier to come by as scraps so keen to know if it is lasting the distance and not to flimsy
