I posted a picture of a roasting jack, French, from the 19th century last year, when it was on eBay. This one is considerably earlier, although it's hard to tell with things that age. It's been speculated that roasting jacks pre-dated mechanical clocks, and were the model for the early ones. The frames, the weight drive, even the form of the fly for the speed control of the strike are remarkably similar to ones used in early church clocks.
