"Neil, do you by any chance come from Pisa in Italy?"

No, but you are right. The counterweight technique was used in part to stabilize the leaning tower.

It is a cheap, easy and largely no-risk method of stopping and righting leaning due to settlement.

Actually, I had another look. I don't think the post is leaning after all, but it does look like the corners of the tray are sagging a bit. I'd love to see it in action.
It does confirm my long-held suspicion though - you can cook a pizza in just about anything if you are keen enough.

That is not a lean!!!!
It is slightly angled forward so the water runs out when it rains like hell (if it ever does over there)
I think it is ''pissa'' of an oven, I would not mind standing around it having a beer or three waiting for some tucker to come out of it

They might need the self draining feature in a minute. I was sitting on my couch surfing Ebay when i heard a loud rumble and realised the room is dark. So I looked outside, we have a big thundercloud drifting in from the east. Very unusual.
Actually it has been unusual weather here for some time. The average rain here is sort of in the range of 12 to 14 inches (300-350mm) Last year we got about 17 inches (427mm)
That extra 3 to 5 inches is enough to get most people smiling. Can't imagine what it is likt to live where they measure the rainfall in feet, not inches.

P.S. I reckon that oven would be a beaut in the winter - there is no insulation, so it would radiate plenty of heat on a cold winter's night, I imagine.
