Great, this is very reassuring. I'll build a tallish chimney to send the smoke into the airflow over the garage. I'll also be careful with what I put in the oven (as fuel). We have a tree surgeon nearby who also sells well seasoned hardwood. I can do the drying/seasoning myself too. There will be room for that under the cooking/eating area roof.

Also, thanks for the Sketch-up link, I'll try it out.

The top down method of fire lighting produces very little smoke. I often try it for fun, but it usually only works 50% of the time and then I resort to a bit of kero or garden flare fuel. The smoke only seems to be a problem for first 5 mins.anyway.
