One thing has been with me since I was a small boy. Dad kind of took a no nonsense approach to rasing 5 boys. We knew early on the difference between right and wrong and treating people as you would expect to be treated.
Being the youngest I had the pleasure of hearing most of his talks multiple times; by the time we each became teenagers the "talks" were simple and to the point - Go to jail, you'll stay in jail; damnit, you know better.
Needless to say, only one of us has ever had a run in with the law, my second oldest brother while in college - for offering a cop a sip of his beer as he and his friends walked out of a bar (no open container law). My brother spent 2 nights in jail until one of his friends could get the cash to bail him out.....didn't call Dad for help, just my mom to let her know he wouldn't be home for a day or two.
