New Forno Bravo Forum Feature

Forno Bravo Forum Community,

You will notice a new forum at the top of the main page called, "Ask Me Anything". This forum will be used for live one hour "Ask Me Anything" (AMA) sessions hosted by people who are knowledgeable in different areas pertaining to wood fired ovens. How it works:
- Each AMA will have a "sticky" thread where the community can post questions they would like answered during the live session. This will allow everyone to participate even if you can't be online for the live session. These questions will not be answered by the host until the live AMA; if you need an answer quickly, you should post it in the appropriate Forum area for the community to respond.
- Another thread will be posted for the live AMA. Registered users who are logged in during the live session can interact with the host by asking questions and receiving responses.
- The live thread will remain in the AMA forum to view after the session.

To kick off our AMA feature, we have invited author, chef and master bread maker and host of Pizza Quest, Peter Reinhart, to be our first host! Peter will be in the Forum on Monday, February 15th, from 7:00 - 8:00 pm EST. If you are unable to be online during the live session, you can post your questions in the sticky post. Peter will answer those questions during the live session on February 15th. You can view Peter's answers to your questions as well as what happened during the live session in the session thread.

We hope you enjoy this new feature! Please let us know if there is a topic that you'd like to have as an AMA and we'll look for a host!

    Hi all
    Ok still trying to get materials. What a pain.

    I have been looking at a cob style oven I can get a good quality clay from a local source, sand is plentiful.

    Has anyone used a clay oven floor ? Do they hold up ?

    Do they need many firings to harden up ( vitrify )

    While asking questions can clay be used to make a chimmeny also Or should I use a piece of flue liner ?

    I built a cob oven with bench seats on the side. I used fire bricks on the floor and it works just fine- I used empty bottles and a cob mix under the bricks for under insulation also. I hope this helps you out.

      You won't get the oven hot enough to begin any vitrification. That starts to happen at about 900C The clay becomes permanent (won't turn back into mud if made wet) starting at 573 C You are unlikely to reach this temp on the floor and if you attempt it you are likely to create cracking as the clay is unstable at around these temps.and it would only be the surface that you would get hot enough. You would be far better off using something that has already been kiln fired. Firebricks are best, or if you want to save money, clay pavers or solid reds. An unfired mud floor will also be prone to lots of wear.

        Thanks for the info.

        I finally found some fire brick at $2.80 each. So I bought 40 for the floor. Hi Temp Mortar and got some flue liner free.

        I ordered clay from company out of Medicine Hat, Alberta. They offer many clays so I told them what I was doing and they recommended a blue,green clay. $ 15.00 for 20 KG.

        I pour my lower base yesterday. !!!
