I'm Peter Reinhart! Ask Me Anything! Monday, February 15, 2016 7:00-8:00 pm EST

To kick off our AMA feature, we have invited author, chef and master bread maker and host of Pizza Quest, Peter Reinhart, to be our first host! Peter will be in the Forum on Monday, February 15th, from 7:00 - 8:00 pm EST. If you are unable to be online during the live session, you can post your questions in the sticky post. Peter will answer those questions during the live session on February 15th. You can view Peter's answers to your questions as well as what happened during the live session in the session thread.

Ask Me Anything New Forum Feature

You will notice a new forum at the top of the main page called, "Ask Me Anything". This forum will be used for live one hour "Ask Me Anything" (AMA) sessions hosted by people who are knowledgeable in different areas pertaining to wood fired ovens. How it works:
- Each AMA will have a "sticky" thread where the community can post questions they would like answered during the live session. This will allow everyone to participate even if you can't be online for the live session. These questions will not be answered by the host until the live AMA; if you need an answer quickly, you should post it in the appropriate Forum area for the community to respond.
- Another thread will be posted for the live AMA. Registered users who are logged in during the live session can interact with the host by asking questions and receiving responses.
- The live thread will remain in the AMA forum to view after the session.

We hope you enjoy this new feature! Please let us know if there is a topic that you'd like to have as an AMA and we'll look for a host!

    Will this work ? The back wall of my house is setup
    ----picture window, 8" of wall, Fireplace, 8" of wall, picture window-----
    The brick of the fireplace from edge to edge is 56" and when standing on the back porch it extends away from the house about 2 feet. My plan was to build on to this existing brick structure, even to the extent of tapping into the existing chimney for the chimney of the oven. To do this the chimney would need to be at the back of the unit is this OK. Other issues anyone can think of ?

    HEAT LOSS and lots of it, Improper airflow.

    You could always work the chimney from front to back in a squirrel tail design to connect to existing structure as long as local building codes will allow it.

      Hi Swallace63,
      I've read your detail and must be well and truly in the holiday mode as I can't make any sense out of it. A picture (photgraph) or illustration would help to make an educated decission.
      To get your smoke from the front of your oven to the rear and into an existing house chimney is frought with problems. Smoke will travel easily up a vertical or almost vertical path, but doesn't like going sidways or being redirected especially through bends.
      I have made some diagrams and interpreted your explaination this way.

            you certainly don't want your chimney coming out from your dome as you never keep the oven hot, you will need to bring the chimney out from the front outside your oven entrance (void) and direct the smoke up through a chimney that has at least 2 almost 45˚ bends in it. This is where the smoke will struggle to pass easily so it would be beneficial to have a larger rather than smaller chimney cross section.
            Your diagram also indicates that the back of you oven will be the original house rear chimney vertical wall! Were you going to keep a circular Pompeii oven floor or one similar but cut in halves?

              As this is a tie in to your home's fireplace, I'm hoping that you are looking into local regulations and code restrictions. That said, I believe the national fire code states that a flue/chimney cannot exceed 30 degrees in any single elbow - you would have to have several to pull it back over the dome and tie it in. I would seriously consider getting some advice from you local fire dept and code enforcement....building an oven in your backyard (like many of us - including me) is a different animal than building one attached to you home AND tied into an existing fireplace.
              Hopefully David (dmun) will chime in on this...he built a Rumford fireplace on the inside and a beautiful geodesic dome oven on the outside.....I would say he is this forum's resident expert on this topic.
