    Gentlemen:
    My first question is one from my contractor. Knowing the plywood is placed so the concrete slab is level with the top of the stand, what if the plywood was lowered about 1" below the top of the blocks? Would this notch in the concrete layer make the entire slab stronger and more stable? Or is it even worth considering?
    Second question is a ledge on the front part of the slab. I am having a curved one about 8" from the blocks at the center being done. It seems to me that i want the ledge plus at least another 8" back to be solid 8" deep of straight concrete, rather than the vermiculite/concrete mix. Just trying to figure how this can be done.
    Finally, the contractor has put in 5 courses of concrete block to make the oven higher. I am 6' 4" tall and looking forward to working a surface at a favorable height. But the opening in the stand concerns me. A great place for varmints to hide, insects and wasps to reproduce, and rain water build up in the enclosed space. I do not really need the space for firewood since my wood pile is close and besides anything below knee level is not good for an old fart with bad knees like me!! Any suggestions on some easy type of door for this space. I did have the contractor put a row of 1/2 wide concrete blocks on the bottom of the opening to deter rain water. Any help would be appreciated.

    Lots of questions.
    You might try reading the ebook and a few threads of builders with detailed pictures and instructions.

    I built a cantilever in the front of my oven and so did Ken. You might those threads out.

      Jim Bob,

      I lowered mine more than an inch - In fact, the top of my slab is even with the block.

      PhotoPlog - Error

      In regard to the storage area, you don't need to build it in unless you require access underneath for some reason. It's just free space so most of us make use of it.

        Someone did a wheeled cart for storage which, when pushed all the way in, the end panel formed the door. You might want to consider a roll out for storage of pizza tools and other things you need around the patio. It could even be a work station that you could stow in a dry place when not needed.

            Dmun,
            thanks for the tip. The rolling cart idea probably won't work on my stand due to the row of 1/2 blocks on the floor of the opening to inhibit rain water from filling the enclosed area. But i am sure i can figure something to take advantage of the storage area.

            Appreciate the info. Since I am plannng on a cantilevered ledge in front of the oven, not sure how you would do that if the 3.5" concrete slab was level with the top of the blocks.

            I took your advice and starting reviewing some of the vast resources available thru this site. It was too much to wade thru in a short period, but will continue to look at them for tips. I had already downloaded the PDF file of the FB specs and that has been my principal guide.

                Dave,

                If you will look above you will see comments from Les saying that his hearth concrete slab is level with the top of the blocks. I guess he is putting the insulating 4" layer on top of that. But that would seem to rule out putting a cantilevered front ledge on the slab since you cannot extend the rebar out from the concrete slab into the ledge for support.]
                Does that make sense?

                  I apologize, you were talking about my original second question about the ledge. I was trying to resolve the idea of a cantilevered ledge made of two different layers-- the concrete and insulating layer. I assume the the ledge plus another 8" back should be straight concrete and i was trying figure out to make the supports to separate the two. So that the vermiculite/concrete mix would only be poured on top of the concrete from there on back.
                  Probably is a stupid question but not knowledgeable enough with concrete forms to resolve the issue on my own.

                        Is yours a 36 or 42 inch oven that will sit on top of that insulated slab? It looks like quite a reach from the front of the cantilevered ledge to the back of the proposed oven. Not sure my peel or rake would be long enough!
                        Nice job, though and i bet it did take a few beers to complete it.

                          Mine is a 42".

                          No problems reaching the back.

                          I use a hoe, a rack, a peel, (i do have a long peel though)

                          Although .... I usually don't have hair on my hand.

                            I am being stupid again, but i don't know what a rack is. At least not that kind of rack! But everybody has to start somewhere, i guess.

                            I watched your pizza making video. Man, it sure cooked it fast. About 1.5 minutes?!!! You certainly can't leave the oven while it is in. The pizza appeared burnt on one side, so i was wondering when cooking pizza do you always leave the wood fires burning or do you ever get the oven hot and simply scrape all the coals and burning wood out so it might cook more evenly but perhaps take a little longer to cook?

                              Leave the fire in the oven. And it's usually best to add an extra log so the flames are just licking the top of the dome.
