New Forno Bravo Forum Feature

Forno Bravo Forum Community,

You will notice a new forum at the top of the main page called, "Ask Me Anything". This forum will be used for live one hour "Ask Me Anything" (AMA) sessions hosted by people who are knowledgeable in different areas pertaining to wood fired ovens. How it works:
- Each AMA will have a "sticky" thread where the community can post questions they would like answered during the live session. This will allow everyone to participate even if you can't be online for the live session. These questions will not be answered by the host until the live AMA; if you need an answer quickly, you should post it in the appropriate Forum area for the community to respond.
- Another thread will be posted for the live AMA. Registered users who are logged in during the live session can interact with the host by asking questions and receiving responses.
- The live thread will remain in the AMA forum to view after the session.

To kick off our AMA feature, we have invited author, chef and master bread maker and host of Pizza Quest, Peter Reinhart, to be our first host! Peter will be in the Forum on Monday, February 15th, from 7:00 - 8:00 pm EST. If you are unable to be online during the live session, you can post your questions in the sticky post. Peter will answer those questions during the live session on February 15th. You can view Peter's answers to your questions as well as what happened during the live session in the session thread.

We hope you enjoy this new feature! Please let us know if there is a topic that you'd like to have as an AMA and we'll look for a host!

  • motar mix...worries..

    I built my dome using a mix of 1 part portland cement, 5 parts lome (sand with some clay in it) and 1 part lime. I also used second hand red brick. It has been about a week since i finished building and the dome still smells of motar. I have fired it twice.
    I got the mix out of a book by Russell Jeavons. I am worried that the portland cement mix and the old bricks may be toxic (old bricks came from a chimney - i think) and that i may have to knock my beautiful dome down and start again. Any thoughts? Will the smell go away? Is the mix OK? Bricks OK?

    Lome? You mean loam, like topsoil? If that's the case you probably have some organic matter that's stinking the place up. There are people who successfully build ovens from mud and straw, so I think the smell should go away with repeated firings.

    And yes, ordinary red brick is perfectly safe, unless it chips or spalls and pieces get in your food.

      The loam (lome) here is used by builders to lay mortar. It is basically reddish/darkish sand with clay. Not sure of the ratio but at least 80 to 90 percent sand. It is a fine sandy feel when dry but sticks together well when wet.

      I was more worried about whether or not I should have used portland cement.

        No problem with Portland cement. Do a google search and you will find no health problems with it. Oder should go away with time and firing it more

          Wilcannia hey, Im heading out that way soonish to White Cliffs for opals.

          Loam is a term used in various parts of Oz for Brickies sand.
          The mortar and bricks will be fine, never heard of either being toxic.
          The smell will go away once the oven is cured, two firing wont be anywhere near enough to cure it.

          Id love to drop in and have a look on the way up north, I just dont know when Ill be up there?

            "Loam" over here is dirt. Of course mortar is called "Mud"...
